For example, rhythmic, linear movement such as gentle back-and-forth swinging provides soothing sensory input. In contrast, unpredictable or faster movements such as rocking, spinning, side-to-side movement, and sudden stopping and starting in midair will provide extra stimulation and intense sensory input. With these kind of movements, its important to cater to an individual’s personal sensory processing needs and modulation, so that they do not feel overwhelmed or dysregulated. In terms of occupational therapy, a swing is great tool to work on strength, balance, visual processing, body awareness, gross motor coordination, neck and leg extension, and visual tracking. Swings are also great for using alongside other activities such as grabbing objects from underneath, throwing and catching objects while moving, and hitting targets with a ball while swinging.
